PREFACE.
When it was first proposed to include this book in the Sri Vani Vilas Sastra Series two considerations weighed in my mind. The first was there was no good and accurate edition of the work. The Kavyamala Series contained the text of the Sutras and the Vritti but unfortunately this edition left much to be desired. The Sutras were mistaken for the Vritti in several places and vice versa. Hence a correct edition was a necessity.The second consideration was to publish the rare commentary called Kamadhenu by Gopendra Tippa Bhupala. Two fine manuscripts of this commentary were obtained through the kindness of Sri Addanki Kumaratatachariar of Madras and Sri Srisailatatachariar of Little Conjeeveram. With the aid of these, this edition was begun and while it was in the press, there appeared in the Chowkamba Sanskrit Series this same work with this very commentary. A perusal of it clearly showed that I need not delay this edition and accordingly with the co-operation of Pandit R. V. Krishnamachariar, to whom my thanks are due, I have been able to complete this work and I leave it to the readers to judge how far I was justified in having pushed on this edition when others existed already in the field.
