INTRODUCTION.

The enumeration of Sukta in the sixth Kana requires to be noticed. In the work called Brilatsnrvinukramanika of Atharvaveda, it is stated that most of the Saktas in the sixth Kanda consist of three Riks. Sayana says, however, that notwithstanding this statement, he has followed the prevalent practice of the reciters of Atharvaveda of uniting two Sakta५ into one and has written the introduction to each two together , We have retained the ordinal given by Sayana on this principle at the beginning of each Rik, but have followed the statement of the Brihatsarvanukramanika in giving the number at the end of each Rik. Our number of Suktas thus differs from that of Sayana. We have given the number of the Anuvak and Sukta from the Kanda at the top of each alternate page with the number of the Sakta firom the beginning, outside the brackets.

For the division and numbering of the Saktns in the Seventh Kanda, we refer the reader to the Introduction of the first volume.

The Suktas contained in the Kandas VIII to XI, both inclusive, are stated to be either Paryayasuktas or Arthasuktas by the Brihatsarvanukramanika. Out of these all Paryayasuktas are enumerated in the Introduction of the first volume. The rest are termed Arthasuktas. Sayana follows the practice of most of the reciters of this Veda and subdivides these Suktas, giving introductory re ks at the be 11n of cach subdivision and numbering ' the Riks of cnch Sullivision separately This numbering of Rike in Bhashya in retained in this edition but at the end of cach Rik of the Arthaskta is given a figure showing to 11 be• as it would be accorlin the Brihatsarvant kannaka. Wher ench of the subdivisions of Paryayasuktas and Arthasuktas ends, the number of that subdivision is shown by a numerical figuge in small type.

Lastly, it remains to be mentioned that in this volume, as elsewhere, where it was impossible to procure a copy of Bhashya, remarks have been given at the beginning of each Sakta, based on, Kausika Sutra, Kesava Tika and other authorities, on the model of those which are to be seen in Bhashya.
